The Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section (TMA-MSS) Texas A&M College of Medicine chapter focused on policy and advocacy efforts over the past year. Our recent highlights include:

Hosted recruitment events to inform students about the role of TMA and the American Medical Association (AMA) and increase membership.
Several students held leadership positions: four students held TMA Board, Council, and Committee positions for the 2020-2021 term; three students served on the 2020 TMA-MSS Ad Hoc Committee.
Hosted a Meet & Greet with TMA Past President David Fleeger, MD.
Awarded grant from the TMA Foundation for our Community Week Health Fair (event on hold due to COVID-19).
Conducted resolution writing training sessions to guide interested students in creating policy.

Our chapter aims to continue and strengthen our efforts in 2021 to improve health care for the communities we serve!

TMA’s ongoing advocacy has led to meaningful physician workforce gains, and telemedicine technologies and revenue boosters are helping to maximize access to care. But shortages – most entrenched in rural areas and certain specialties – persist as Texas lags in its ratio of patient care physicians and an increasing average physician age foreshadows a deepening workforce crisis. Looking ahead to 2025, TMA is focused on ensuring the Texas Legislature finds new ways to grow and maximize the state’s physician workforce across the many specialties it needs. Plus, how TMA experts help identify medical documentation missteps that may lead to payment and prior authorization denials, and how Texas is grappling with syphilis.
