The Texas Medical Association (TMA) International Medical Graduate Section (TMA-IMG) recognized Maya Varshney, MD, of Carrizo Springs with the TMA International Medical Graduate Outstanding Physician Award for her exceptional volunteer service outside of her medical practice.

The section’s physicians honored her during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, in Fort Worth this year.

Dr. Varshney has championed women’s health, bringing mammography to her rural community in the 1990s and by establishing a women’s imaging center. She also helped expand the Community Services Agency of South Texas, and she awards scholarships to high school seniors pursuing health careers.

TM23 Outstanding Physician AwardShe also supports many health-related organizations, including the American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and World Central Kitchen in Ukraine.

“I am humbled to receive this honor from our organization. I have been a TMA member my entire career,” said Dr. Varshney. “TMA has helped me serve my rural community in Southwest Texas.”

Dr. Varshney has practiced obstetrics-gynecology and family medicine in the rural Winter Garden Region of southwest Texas, southwest of San Antonio. “I am proud and grateful to care for women’s health in Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, and surrounding small towns for over 40 years,” she said.

Dr. Varshney received her medical degree from the Sarojini Naidu Medical College in India.

The TMA-IMG section created the award in 2019. The association created the section in 1997 to promote diversity and integration in Texas medicine and provide a direct means for IMGs to participate in TMA activities. IMG physicians are an essential part of the physician workforce in Texas.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
